Islamabad Fashion Week: Fashion on the Runway of a Diplomatic Landmark
Islamabad Fashion Week (IFW) was launched in January 2011 by Triple-E — the same event management company, led by Arshad Siddiqui, behind Karachi Fashion Week — with veteran stylist Tariq Amin once again serving as creative head. Like KFW, IFW does not maintain an active website today, but its debut edition remains a distinctive moment in Pakistan’s fashion history, both for who it brought together and for where it was staged.
A Fashion Week Staged Inside a Diplomatic Landmark
IFW’s first edition opened at the Serena Hotel, one of Islamabad’s most architecturally distinctive properties. Designed by celebrated Pakistani architect Nayyar Ali Dada and opened in 2002, the hotel draws on the form of a traditional caravanserai — the fortified inns that once sheltered travellers along historic trade routes — and sits within Islamabad’s diplomatic enclave as a member of the Leading Hotels of the World. It is more commonly associated with heads of state and international diplomacy than with a fashion runway; the hotel has continued to host high-level diplomatic meetings in the years since. That made it an unusual, and unusually prestigious, choice of venue for a fashion week, in a city built for government rather than runway shows.
The choice was deliberate. Tariq Amin explained to FashionNetwork that Islamabad’s concentration of embassies and its tighter security made it a more viable base for courting international buyers than Lahore or Karachi at the time. Dawn’s coverage of the opening reflected that reality on the ground: with security a central concern, the hotel’s basement was closed off to regular guests for the duration of the four-day event, even as members of the fashion press arrived from abroad to cover it.
Designers, Models and a Nationwide Talent Hunt
To staff the runway, Amin ran a model hunt across Islamabad and Lahore, ultimately selecting 60 aspiring models to open the event alongside more established faces. The opening day showcased four designers’ collections on those new discoveries, and the event drew genuine international interest: Indian designer Priyanka Bhansal was originally billed to open the show but was denied a visa, a reminder of the practical hurdles involved in building a cross-border fashion platform from Islamabad. Among those who did take the runway, jewellery designer Shafaq Habib earned a standing ovation for a collection inspired by Pharaonic headdresses and traditional eastern motifs, while designers including Envogue by Hamida, Deeba and ZOE, and Ammar Belal also presented collections across the event’s editions, with choreography led by Pakistani fashion figure Amina “Pomme” Gohar and hair and make-up by Karachi-based stylist Shaheen Saeed.
The event’s blend of glamour and heavy security also caught the attention of international media: VICE covered IFW as part of its “Fashion Week Internationale” documentary series, giving the event a level of Western editorial attention that few Pakistani fashion weeks received at the time.
Legacy
IFW’s second edition, held in April 2012, moved to the Pak-China Friendship Centre — a larger, more conventional exhibition venue — suggesting the Serena Hotel debut was as much a one-time statement as it was a lasting template. As with Karachi Fashion Week, Triple-E has since moved away from running an annual fashion week, and IFW has not continued as an active event. The platforms that later anchored Pakistan’s fashion calendar, Fashion Pakistan Week and the PFDC Sunsilk Fashion Week, have themselves since paused. The country’s fashion industry has since regrouped around LAAM Fashion Week, a Lahore-based, runway-to-e-tail platform that launched in February 2026 and streams collections live to more than 120 countries. IFW’s debut nonetheless remains a notable chapter, for having placed Pakistani fashion on the runway of one of the country’s most recognisable diplomatic addresses.
