Shanghai Fashion Week Asia

Shanghai Fashion Week was originated from 2003. At first it held only once a year in October for S/S project of next year and later from 2008 it’s been holding twice a year in April and October for A/W and S/S.

In 2011, Shanghai Fashion Week was lifted by government as a national-level event. Nowadays, it has been carved into an innovation banquet for the leading designers, a window that displays the image of the successful brands, and a market testing place for foreign brands that are coming into the market. Meanwhile, it has provided more and more opportunities for emerging talents to show their creation.

The underlying message from organizers is straightforward: “local is international”. For this edition, that increasingly means combining Chinese creative talent and global fashion businesses in the same commercial ecosystem, rather than measuring success by the number of foreign names on the calendar.

That shift is particularly visible in the growing role of Chinese designers within major domestic companies. On October 11, Chinese sportswear giant Anta will announce the next phase of its partnership with designer Chen Peng, with the collaboration also featuring during SHFW. This relationship points to a broader move towards longer-term creative partnerships with Chinese design talent rather than seasonal collaborations.
